- Planning Installation:
At the beginning of Unit 2 I want to make an installation pic which I have never down before. Creating artwork out of canvas, this is my fist time trying. I plan to work with wood because I want the objects have a strong feeling of weight while they were patterned.
Option 1: I reference the idea from《I Ching》to build a Hexagram which is fulled with 2 trigram.
Option 2: I got this idea of creating a pattern space by after watching TATE Shots about Kusama's Obliteration room and Ruth Asawa's idea about line in her sculpture:" Lines can go anywhere." At the same time, I am considering about the negative space in these two plans Because two different plans show different theme feelings: stressful / playful.
( top: Kusama's Obliteration Room
right: Asawa's sculptures. )
In the installation, I plan to use wood as the base material so I borrow some small pieces from wood shop to test the outcome.
Left: wood with gesso ink on the top. Right: wood with gesso acrylic on the top.
It was quite similar to paint lines on wood to canvas. But we can see if I use Ink on the top when I touch the surface the ink will be blurred. It will not happen on the acrylic surface. Also, acrylic surface has more light refection than ink on the wood.
At the same time, I also inspired by Tomas Saraceno who's artworks mostly work with the idea from nature science area. For example: Algo-r(h)i(y)thms.
I started to try how to extend line into space. By getting inspiration from him I want to use nail and wire to link the lines together from the wood panel.
- Practicing new Brush strokes with the idea about repetitive form/movement :
In my previous works, I drew well controlled lines form as a way to get inner balance, meditation which kind of relate to the practicing of Zen. My thought, my emotion will temporarily disappear gradually by drawing these stable lines. However, trying new, expressive, repetitive brush lines expose my inner feeling to the front straightforward without any concern.
The reason why I want to take a move is that I want to combine repetitive form and movement together as some elements in my artwork. The way to show how movement works is to paint the lines more expressive. I want to keep the brutish brush strokes in a simple form which is meaning for myself can undertake the duty: self-expression.
-Change of Implication:
Since our studio were closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic I started to make iPad painting at home. The artworks I made all represent the living condition I experienced or perceived during during the whole country turned to lockdown. It is very unexpected, the lines/motifs I draw they actually changed their role in my painting even they looks the same as before. They seem to be giving life. It is like "Prosopopoeia". The mark looks like person (non-figurative) rather than a form/pattern in my paintings. The marks are be given function to present as social/personify objects.
